What is Dementia

Dementia is an umbrella term meaning a set of symptoms.

There are over 100 types, and sub-types, of dementia but it is the primary dementias that are of great conern as currently there is no cure.

The most common type of dementia is Dementia of the Alzheimer’s Type (DAT) followed by Vascular Dementia (VAD). To have both types is relatively common and is referred to as Mixed Dementia. The third most common type of dementia is Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), or Lewy Body Type Dementia.

While there is nothing we can do currently to cure dementia, there are some strategies that can be employed to reduce the risk of developing dementia and there are some psycho-social strategies that can be used to enhance the quality of life of people living with dementia and their loved ones.
